A cracked spider causes extreme vibration, banging, and eventual bearing failure if left unrepaired.

The spider is the multi-arm cast bracket on the back of the drum. The central hub connects to the drive shaft, and the arms bolt to the drum tub.
Spider failure is usually caused by electrolytic corrosion where aluminium casting meets the stainless steel drum, the arms crack at the junction.
When a spider arm cracks, the drum wobbles and destroys the bearings if left unrepaired.
